The International Foundation for Arts and Culture sponsored Suhaimi Magi to visit Australia between the period 1 September 1999 to 26 September 1999. Suhaimi visited Victoria (Victorian College of the Arts and a variety of dance companies located in Melbourne), Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia (Academy of Performing Arts and Western Australian Ballet).
The main objective of the visit - to attempt to discover a new movement vocabulary and the thinking behind it, was not fully realized as it was difficult to spend sufficient time working with students at each location. However, the visit achieved many other objectives, which included a broader understanding of contemporary dance forms in Australia, and an understanding of their relationship with traditional Asian dance. Meetings with many dance artists, Melbourne, Perth and Canberra created many opportunities to discover new colours, and expressive nuances in performance style.
There was overall, a very positive response towards the national arts academy in Malaysia, with many people expressing interest in visiting Kuala Lumpa and to build a continuing relationship as a result of these visits. Establishing this crossroad of culture was the significant outcome of the visit.
