AARNE NEEME
DAVID WILLIAMSON'S "MONEY AND FRIENDS" - UGALA THEATRE, ESTONIA

The visit provided value and benefit by introducing contemporary Australian theatre culture, in terms of writing and production practice, both for the Estonian theatre profession and the general public.

The project had extensive coverage in the national Estonian paper "Meie Kodu" where they reproduced many interviews and reviews. There was universal interest in Australia, and the project went a long way towards sharing, formally and informally, ideas about Australian theatre repertoire and practice with colleagues at Ugala and other Estonian theatres.

Details of Activities:

  • Directed a production of David Williamson's "Money and Friends", translated into Estonian for the Ugala Theatre in Viljandi, Estonia
  • Attended a conference to review progress and plan future objectives for the Ugala Theatre
  • Lectured on aspects of Australian theatre at the Theatre Department of Tartu University
  • Registered visitor at the Estonian Theatre Festival "Drama 99", held in Tartu
  • Visited the Estonian Higher Theatre School in Tallinn
  • Prepared a paper outlining Estonian Theatre Practice, covering training, repertoire, organisation and subsidy.
